Ever dreamed of being a police officer? Or just curious about what kinds of things they do? Kirkland's Police Dept has this really slick program called their 'Citizens Academy' which will run on Wednesdays from Feb 3rd thru April 21st 6-9pm this year (no cost). I had so much fun in class last year that Steve is doing it this time around. They just had a few last minute spots open up- so stop by the PD to get your registration packet today (it's due by this FRIDAY!).
All of the classes are taught by Kirkland officers, some of which are very very entertaining (shoutout to Lt. Ursino!Of course you too, O'Neill :-) and all of which are professional and spend their time protecting us from the bad guys. Each class starts out with a quick review of what happened around town that week-- which is quite eye-opening to say the least. Topics over the 12wk period include: Patrol, Search/Seizure, Traffic, Accident Investigation, Crisis Negotiations/SRT, Domestic Violence, Use of Force, Corrections, and K9. There are even some local field trips where we got to go to the shooting range (check out my 'packin heat' photo, above), investigate a fake crime scene, get tazed (they seem to enjoy replaying the video of me getting tazed, haha very funny) go to the courthouse and meet Judge Lambo, and even do a ride-along with an officer.
If you have the time to commit to taking a class like this, I'd highly recommend it. We had a super fun group and I looked forward to it each week. Contact Officer Allan O'Neill if you are interested. 425-587-3451 or aoneill@ci.kirkland.wa.us . ~j
